Friday night, the Reds and Jonathan India agreed to a two-year deal worth $8.8 million. This was the last player on the Reds eligible for arbitration with Antone, Fraley, Sims, Stephenson, and Young already coming to agreements. During 2024, India will earn $3.8 million, followed by $5 million in 2025. Built into the deal, escalators can help India to earn up to an additional 2.05 million based on the number of games he starts and total plate appearances in 2025 (first reported by Charlie Goldsmith).

Overall, this is a great move for Cincinnati. By avoiding the arbitration hearings, Cincinnati and India avoid potential conflict such as the one that ultimately drove Corbin Burnes out of Milwaukee starting with last offseason. Additionally, as of the most valuable clubhouse leaders, India should come into camp this spring in good spirits.

With India reportedly expected to take outfield reps this spring, it will be interesting to watch where he ultimately sees the majority of his playing time. The addition of Jeimer Candelario will cut into his playing time in the infield, and McLain should see the majority of second base reps. India may end up making most of his appearances as a DH. Keep an eye out for India also potentially making starts in the corner outfield to spell lefty bats when left-handed pitchers are on the mound. This could turn into a platoon depending on how well India can adapt as a defensive outfielder.
